To call an event carbon neutral in Australia, the offsets have to be in place before it runs. We estimate the footprint before the event, you reduce what you can and offset the rest, then we true up with the real numbers after.
The order matters
Offsets bought after the fact don't make the event itself neutral. The credits have to be retired before it runs, against an estimate. Then the numbers get corrected once the event is over.

In Australia, a certified carbon neutral event runs under Climate Active's Carbon Neutral Standard for Events, which is built on the GHG Protocol. We measure to that standard and can take you through certification if you want the formal mark.
Carbon credits
Each credit is one tonne of CO2 kept out of the air or taken back out of it. You buy them to offset the emissions left after you've cut what you can. Pick a theme, or mix them.

Some projects do real good without producing a carbon credit. They won't change your event's footprint, so they don't count toward carbon neutral. Back them because you care about the outcome. Add them on top.
Crews remove plastic and debris from rivers, harbours and the ocean. Specialist cleanup groups run the boats and the work.
